Crystals
The crystal of a watch is the clear surface/plate that covers and protects the face of the watch.
Typically, there are three types of crystals used in watchmaking:
- Sapphire Crystals (Used by Legacy Watch Co.)
- Used for high end & luxury watches
- Hardness is equal to titanium carbide
- Extremely scratch and shatter resistant
- Will look new for years
- Mineral Crystals
- Used for mid-range watches
- Typically made up of ordinary glass that has been heat or chemically treated to withstand scratches and shattering
- Better than plastic or acrylic crystals
- Plastic or Acrylic crystals
- Used in lower end watches
- Prone to scratch, crack and shatter
