Crystals

The crystal of a watch is the clear surface/plate that covers and protects the face of the watch.

Typically, there are three types of crystals used in watchmaking:

  • Sapphire Crystals (Used by Legacy Watch Co.)
    • Used for high end & luxury watches
    • Hardness is equal to titanium carbide
    • Extremely scratch and shatter resistant
    • Will look new for years
  • Mineral Crystals
    • Used for mid-range watches
    • Typically made up of ordinary glass that has been heat or chemically treated to withstand scratches and shattering
    • Better than plastic or acrylic crystals
  • Plastic or Acrylic crystals
    • Used in lower end watches
    • Prone to scratch, crack and shatter
